The $14 billion investment from Nippon Steel, with a promise to \u201cprotect and create more than 100,000 jobs,\u201d could bring the turnaround they\u2019ve been waiting for.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-142f8e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe people part of it is really exciting,\u201d said Robert Kopf, the vice president of sales at U.S. Steel, about the new investments in American jobs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b3cb55\" class=\"body-graf\">Hammack said the manufacturing sector looked to be \u201creasonably stable\u201d based on her visit to the Irvin Plant. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e11b59\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThese jobs sound like they\u2019re very good jobs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0586b5\" class=\"body-graf\">Over the next three years, U.S. Steel wants to use that money to upgrade their Mon Valley plants, and build a brand new hot strip mill. Lower interest rates would lower the costs of making those massive investments. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-13a54a\" class=\"body-graf\">But Hammack says she wants to hold pat on interest rates, unless the unemployment rate ticks up, or job creation slows down too much.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-47d606\" class=\"body-graf\">Another benefit of cutting rates would be stimulating the purchase of steel-heavy purchases like appliances and cars, Kopf said. Steel purchases for home building would get a bump too.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b45dde\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cAll the construction steel we make here, we would love to see the residential construction market finally pick up,\u201d Kopf said. \u201cI know higher interest rates have been a little bit of a barrier to that. So we would welcome lower interest rates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-015654\" class=\"body-graf\">When Nippon Steel Corporation agreed to buy U.S. Steel in 2023, President Joe Biden opposed the deal, as did Trump when he was on the campaign trail. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b51331\" class=\"body-graf\">But after taking office for a second term, Trump approved the deal on the company\u2019s promise to invest in U.S. Steel, \u201cprotect and create\u201d those 100,000 jobs, and give the U.S. government a \u201cgolden share\u201d that allows the president to stop the idling of any U.S. Steel facilities.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4c446f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe are once again going to put Pennsylvania into the backbone of America,\u201d Trump said during a visit to the Irvin Plant in May.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/us-steel-manufacturing-fed-economy-interest-rates-job-market-rcna261598\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an air of optimism at the Irvin Plant southeast of Pittsburgh.
