{"id":4402,"date":"2026-03-05T22:09:04","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T22:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/conservative-politics.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/republican-led-house-declines-to-constrain-trumps-war-in-iran-just-as-senate-did\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T22:09:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T22:09:04","slug":"republican-led-house-declines-to-constrain-trumps-war-in-iran-just-as-senate-did","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/conservative-politics.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/republican-led-house-declines-to-constrain-trumps-war-in-iran-just-as-senate-did\/","title":{"rendered":"Republican-led House declines to constrain Trump&#8217;s war in Iran, just as Senate did"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"anchor-f02b68\" class=\"body-graf\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Republican-controlled House narrowly voted Thursday to reject a resolution that would restrict President Donald Trump\u2019s war in Iran, one day after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-blocks-restrictions-trump-using-military-iran-war-rcna261680\" target=\"_blank\">Senate blocked a similar war powers resolution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ad1379\" class=\"body-graf\">Taken together, the pair of failed House and Senate votes represent an implicit authorization by Congress for Trump to carry on his military strikes against Iran, which began last weekend, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/poll-majority-voters-disapproves-trump-handled-iran-rcna261564\" target=\"_blank\">majority of Americans<\/a> say they oppose the war.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-202875\" class=\"body-graf\">The House vote was 212-219. Just two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Warren Davidson of Ohio, broke with Trump and joined most Democrats in supporting the resolution.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d6991a\" class=\"body-graf\">Four moderate Democrats voted with all other Republicans against the resolution: Reps. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/bipartisan-duo-expects-signatures-wednesday-force-vote-release-epstein-rcna231405\" target=\"_blank\">same bipartisan duo<\/a> that successfully fought for the release of the Epstein files, authored the legislation. It would have halted Trump\u2019s military operations in Iran unless Congress voted to declare war or authorize the use of military force there.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-784f6f\" class=\"body-graf\">Democrats have pointed out that the Constitution grants Congress the authority to declare war and that Trump and his top officials are calling it a war.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3647da\" class=\"body-graf\">Even before the vote, Massie acknowledged his resolution was headed for defeat. But he said the vote represented a \u201cvictory in itself\u201d because it forced a lengthy debate on the Iran conflict in public, on the House floor. He predicted that the popularity of Trump&#8217;s war would wane the longer it drags on.   <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-902f9a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA war is never more popular than it is on the first day. And I think enthusiasm for this will decline,\u201d Massie told reporters. He added that \u201cas the true cost of this war starts to be known and starts to pile up, there\u2019ll be more support to end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-69d4d7\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/military\/us-service-members-killed-iran-war-rcna261608\" target=\"_blank\">Six Americans<\/a> have been killed in the conflict so far.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1b3490\" class=\"body-graf\">At his weekly news conference Thursday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., blasted Trump and Republicans for hurling \u201cAmerica into another endless conflict in the Middle East, spending billions of dollars to bomb Iran,\u201d but failing to focus on lowering the cost of groceries, health care and housing for Americans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d325be\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhat\u2019s the justification for sending American men and women into a theater of war, risking their lives?\u201d Jeffries asked. \u201cWe\u2019ve already tragically lost six heroic service men and women, and we mourn for them, and we pray for their families, and we don\u2019t want to see any more American lives lost in Trump\u2019s war of choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-acd773\" class=\"body-graf\">Republicans agreed that Trump had a choice, arguing that the commander in chief chose to defend the United States from an \u201cimminent threat.\u201d The president himself has argued that if the U.S. and Israel didn\u2019t carry out joint strikes, Iran would have attacked first and started a nuclear war.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c933ab\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDefending yourself is a choice. It\u2019s a choice that not everybody makes.
