Ch\u00e1vez was also 14 when he was shot and paralyzed during a robbery by gang members.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dbfc26\" class=\"body-graf\">El Salvador during this time offered few opportunities for young people, even for those who had everything going for them. For two teens unable to use their legs, the future was especially bleak.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dae4e1\" class=\"body-graf\">Fast forward to 2026. El Salvador is competing in the Winter Paralympics for the first time in history, and it\u2019s Ch\u00e1vez, 27, and Arias, 28, who are blazing the trail \u2014 on two skis. They have qualified for the Para cross-country skiing event despite hailing from a nation that never sees snow.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1bed16\" class=\"body-graf\">How they got here is an extraordinary story of human resiliency and determination, of two men dedicating themselves to a completely unfamiliar sport and relying on innovative training to get them to the top. After a gang shooting left him without the use of his legs, a stint in rehab opened his eyes to how he would be able to function using only his upper body. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Gretchen Powers<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-a58a07\" class=\"body-graf\">The incident that upended Ch\u00e1vez\u2019s life took place in the capital city of San Salvador on a date seared into his brain: Jan. 7, 2015. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-055d24\" class=\"body-graf\">Ch\u00e1vez was helping his aunt move furniture into her home when, he said, members of Barrio 18 robbed them at gunpoint and demanded that he join the gang. He refused and started to walk away, but at least one of the gang members opened fire, striking him in the spine. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f1f26e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t get up,\u201d he said. \u201cMy legs just stopped moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-44e47e\" class=\"body-graf\">He spent 22 days in the hospital before returning home, unable to see a future worth living.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1ae90a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201dI couldn\u2019t accept myself,\u201d Ch\u00e1vez said. \u201cI cried at anything I saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1219a1\" class=\"body-graf\">But a stint in rehab opened his eyes to how he would be able to function using only his upper body. He went on to join a youth wheelchair basketball team and met a player who became an instant friend: Jonathan Arias.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-26e818\" class=\"body-graf\">Arias had been shot in the beach town of La Libertad in 2011. It was a time when El Salvador\u2019s two main gangs, Barrio18 and MS-13, ruled the streets and shootouts were common.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-daed7b\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI was there at the worst possible moment,\u201d Arias said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-807c76\" class=\"body-graf\">He spent nearly a month in the hospital and then a year recovering at home, rarely venturing outside. Grim thoughts consumed him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-903b61\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to be able to work \u2026 I\u2019m not going to be able to achieve anything \u2026 My life is going to be spent bedridden forever until God takes me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-23a4d8\" class=\"body-graf\">The possibility of playing sports, an idea presented to him during rehab, provided a glimmer of hope. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-19ab62\" class=\"body-graf\">Arias moved to San Salvador and played on the basketball team with Ch\u00e1vez for a few years. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f1cb54\" class=\"body-graf\">But then the pandemic hit and he returned to his hometown of La Libertad. Upon retiring from the ski team, he created a program that brought former Olympic athletes, combat veterans and others \u2014 who had experienced grievous injuries and other devastating setbacks \u2014 to remote U.S. military bases to share messages of hope and resiliency. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-92b0d3\" class=\"body-graf\">In 2010, a friend asked Powers if he would come to El Salvador to assist the country\u2019s Olympic committee. The friend was Sean Colgan, a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic rowing team who went on to launch a minerals trading company and then a foundation that supports sports programs, scientific research and a wide array of other causes around the world.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c4edee\" class=\"body-graf\">When he reached out to Powers, Colgan was coaching El Salvador\u2019s Olympic rowing team.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5899c9\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI dove in and fell in love with the country,\u201d Powers said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e247ce\" class=\"body-graf\">He and Colgan eventually created ONETEAM El Salvador, which provided support and training for first-responders, lifeguards and underserved youth. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fd877d\" class=\"body-graf\">Powers, who was helping the country\u2019s surf federation, was looking at a property for ONETEAM El Salvador when he came upon Arias on the side of the road selling shaved ice treats, known as minutas, for \u201ca buck a piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-34939a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA lightbulb went off,\u201d Powers said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-200367\" class=\"body-graf\">What if he built a program to train young, disabled Salvadorans to surf? <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d3aa81\" class=\"body-graf\">And thus El Salvador\u2019s Paralympic surfing program was born, with Arias as its inaugural member. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/sports\/paralympics\/winter-paralympics-david-chavez-jonathan-arias-skiing-rcna259994\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Ch\u00e1vez and Jonathan Arias grew up in different parts of crime-ridden El Salvador in the 2010s, but they suffered the same brutal fate.
