Gavin Newsom rejected several bills to avoid legal issues and none of his potential <a id=\"OWA67eb03f2-2546-e2a0-3aec-fa9d9a3cf651\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/no-clear-champion-cash-payment-reparations-effort-california-gubernatorial-race\" href=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/no-clear-champion-cash-payment-reparations-effort-california-gubernatorial-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\" data-ogsc=\"\">successors appear to champion<\/a>\u00a0reparations in the gubernatorial race. One of the candidates outright rejected the notion of direct cash payments, which is often associated with reparations efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Lisa Holder, a civil rights attorney and a former member of the state\u2019s Reparations Task Force, reportedly said that advancing reparations would be a long process while advocates search for a champion of the cause. \u201cYou can\u2019t legislate yourself out of 400 years of inequality and injustice. You have to do an entire body of laws to change the systems that have been disparately affecting black folks for decades,\u201d <a id=\"OWA7521899c-80a1-af88-faaa-5ac8849f09c2\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12070361\/push-for-reparations-for-black-californians-continues-despite-setbacks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/12070361\/push-for-reparations-for-black-californians-continues-despite-setbacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"10\" data-ogsc=\"\">Holder told KQED<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cYou now have to put many, many laws in place to change practically every system, whether you\u2019re talking about systems of finance, housing. Laws that require equitable treatment, laws that require affirmative hiring sometimes in industries where Black people were affirmatively not hired.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Cash payment reparations was implemented in Evanston, Illinois.\u00a0Evanston was the first city in the nation to <a id=\"OWA11b3ecd0-b58e-9c9d-6be8-4f2f8087c802\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/weve-proven-reparations-can-work-evanston-activist-city-hasnt-blown-up\" href=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/weve-proven-reparations-can-work-evanston-activist-city-hasnt-blown-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\" data-ogsc=\"\">pass a reparations plan<\/a>, pledging $10 million over a decade to Black residents in November 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_elementToProof\"><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, told Fox News Digital earlier this month it <a id=\"OWA6745afd8-5e91-6dc9-d6eb-9eac21f2601c\" class=\"x_OWAAutoLink\" title=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/watchdog-group-sues-illinois-citys-reparations-program-over-giving-money-based-race\" href=\"https:\/\/noticias.foxnews.com\/media\/watchdog-group-sues-illinois-citys-reparations-program-over-giving-money-based-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\" data-ogsc=\"\">filed a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against Evanston, to stop the city from paying Black residents reparations. The $25,000 payments to Evanston residents are intended to cover housing expenses.
