he legal watchdog organization, Judicial Watch, is suing the Defense Department<\/a>\u00a0seeking gain-of-function proposals that may have been active in the department\u2019s pipeline before the Covid-19 pandemic reached the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit<\/a><\/b>\u00a0against the Department of Defense for records on funding proposals submitted to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office.<\/span><\/p>\n

That office was launched<\/a><\/b>\u00a0in 2014 with DARPA, claiming the office\u2019s programs \u201cpush the leading edge of science\u201d and \u201cwill sometimes be society\u2019s first encounter with the ethical, legal, or social dilemmas that can be raised by new biological technologies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee announced in April 2024 that it had sent letters<\/a><\/b>\u00a0to several agencies requesting: \u201c[I]nformation on their knowledge and involvement regarding the DEFUSE project, a 2018 grant proposal led by EcoHealth Alliance and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.<\/span><\/p>\n
