In Cuba as in China, protests against the government can quickly result in a visit from police, an arrest and likely a stint in a very unpleasant prison. So it&#8217;s noteworthy when people accept that risk and protest anyway.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n        &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>For weeks, Cubans have been going out at night to bang pots and pans in protest of the blackouts and the regime&#8217;s inability to do anything about it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\" contenteditable=\"false\">Cuba \ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddfa BREAKING: nighttime protests have erupted in the capital Havana.<\/p>\n<p>After more then 60 hours without any electricity people have had enough. Protests against thr communist regime are now being reported in several neighborhoods across the capital. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VKFQLNoFkE\">pic.twitter.com\/VKFQLNoFkE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Thomas van Linge (@ThomasVLinge) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThomasVLinge\/status\/2030157366231191704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 7, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That has usually been the extent of it. People in complete darkness making some noise. But yesterday resident of one city escalated by attacking the local communist party headquarters and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/americas\/cubans-intensify-protests-after-sundown-protected-by-the-night-and-blackouts-7edf6fe2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">setting it on fire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cLibertad, libertad,\u201d shouted hundreds of demonstrators as they faced off against police outside the precinct in Mor\u00f3n, a city of about 70,000 near Cuba\u2019s northeastern coast. Protesters then marched to the offices of the ruling Communist Party, according to the Cuban government and videos posted on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Residents threw rocks at the building and tried to set it ablaze. Others climbed on the building\u2019s second story and threw papers and furniture into the street, which they then set on fire. At the time of the protest, Mor\u00f3n hadn\u2019t had any electricity for 30 hours&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Alberto Echemend\u00eda, the head of the Communist Party in Mor\u00f3n, held a rally of \u201crevolutionary reaffirmation\u201d in front of the ransacked party headquarters. \u201cWe live in complicated times,\u201d he told El Invasor, a regional official newspaper, blaming U.S. economic sanctions for the riots.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n        &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The NY Times has more based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/15\/world\/americas\/desperation-in-cuba-ignites-unusual-acts-of-defiance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">videos of the incident<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Videos circulating on social media showed the group approaching the building with flaming objects and throwing them inside. \u201cBurn it all down!\u201d one man said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In one of the videos, what sounds like a gunshot can be heard. \u201cThey got him,\u201d a man said as the camera shows a person limping and then collapsing before people gather around, calling for help. \u00a0It is not clear from the video if the man was actually shot.<\/p>\n<p>The unrest in Mor\u00f3n is the most significant in years, experts say. Que todo el mundo vea estas im\u00e1genes. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1vrQhb05ap\">pic.twitter.com\/1vrQhb05ap<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Agust\u00edn Antonetti (@agusantonetti) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/agusantonetti\/status\/2032686499540451372?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 14, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Government officials spent Saturday reaffirming their commitment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/15\/world\/americas\/desperation-in-cuba-ignites-unusual-acts-of-defiance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to the revolution<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-pasted=\"true\">On Saturday, Mor\u00f3n government officials and local party leaders held what a state-owned newspaper called a \u201crevolutionary reaffirmation ceremony\u201d to criticize the protest and express support for the state.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Gallego, a researcher for the Cuban exile human rights group Cubalex, said that what happened in Mor\u00f3n showed how dissent may be becoming more confrontational. \u201cFor the first time,\u201d he said, \u201cpeople are going to the heart of political power and attacking it head-on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Even as the people of Cuba are increasingly willing to protest the government, there is a pro-communist backlash among leftists in the western world.
