(Photo by Heather Diehl\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OAN Staff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>4:44 PM \u2013 Wednesday, April 8, 2026<\/p>\n<p>First Lady Melania Trump praised a significant milestone in her advocacy for digital safety this week, hailing the first federal conviction under the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/146\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>TAKE IT DOWN Act<\/em>.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>The landmark case, involving a disturbed Ohio man who used artificial intelligence (AI) to terrorize his victims, represents the first major enforcement of the 2025 law aimed at eradicating non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) and deepfake exploitation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdoh\/pr\/columbus-man-pleads-guilty-cyberstalking-exes-creating-ai-generated-obscene-material\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdoh\/pr\/columbus-man-pleads-guilty-cyberstalking-exes-creating-ai-generated-obscene-material\">James Strahler II, 37, of Columbus, Ohio<\/a>, pleaded guilty in the U.S. Court for the Southern District of Ohio to charges including cyberstalking, production of obscene AI visual representations of child sexual abuse, and the \u201cpublication of digital forgeries\u201d \u2014 the specific legal term for deepfakes established by the new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was arrested on federal charges in June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The First Lady, who made the Take It Down Act a cornerstone of her \u201cBe Best\u201d initiative, expressed her support for the Justice Department\u2019s success in a statement on X.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cToday marks the first conviction under the Take It Down Act \u2014 protecting victims from non-consensual AI-generated sexually explicit images, cyberstalking, and threats of violence,\u201d Mrs. Trump wrote. \u201cThank you U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II said in a release. \u201cAnd we are committed to using every tool at our disposal to hold accountable offenders like Strahler, who seek to intimidate and harass others by creating and circulating this disturbing content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\u00a0\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Investigators Discovered:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Massive digital infrastructure<\/mark>: Strahler had over 24 AI platforms and 100 web-based AI models installed on his devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Victim targeting<\/mark>: He targeted at least six adult women, including former romantic partners, and multiple minors within his local community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Deepfake creation<\/mark>: Strahler produced over 700 AI-generated images, many of which involved \u201cmorphing\u201d children\u2019s faces onto adult bodies or creating videos depicting victims in sexual acts with family members to maximize emotional distress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Extortion and threats<\/mark>: Evidence showed he sent these images to victims\u2019 coworkers and families, accompanied by voicemails threatening physical and sexual violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Take It Down Act was signed into law last year \u2014 serving as the first comprehensive federal response to the rise of AI-generated \u201crevenge porn.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table class=\"has-fixed-layout\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><em>TAKE IT DOWN Act<\/em><\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>What Happens <\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Criminalization<\/td>\n<td>Makes it a federal crime to knowingly publish or threaten to publish non-consensual intimate imagery, including AI-generated deepfakes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Takedown mandate<\/td>\n<td>Requires social media and hosting platforms to remove flagged content within 48 hours of a valid victim request.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Penalties<\/td>\n<td>Violators face mandatory restitution, fines, and up to 3 years in prison for cases involving minors.
