Dave Weldon of Florida,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/white-house-pulls-cdc-director-nomination-day-confirmation-hearing-rcna196208\" target=\"_blank\"> was pulled in March 2025<\/a> after Republican senators signaled he wouldn\u2019t be confirmed. Officials then turned to Susan Monarez, a career scientist who had already been serving as acting director. She led the agency for just one month last summer before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/cdc-director-monarez-out-confirmed-rfk-jr-rcna227620\" target=\"_blank\">she was dismissed in August<\/a> after clashing with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccine policy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-777dce\" class=\"body-graf\">Jim O\u2019Neill then served as the agency\u2019s acting director for several months. O\u2019Neill signed off on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/rfk-jr-vaccines-overhaul-kids-denmark-fewer-childhood-shots-rcna250055\" target=\"_blank\">major overhaul of the childhood vaccination schedule<\/a> in January that has since been blocked by a federal judge. He was replaced by National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/nih-director-jay-bhattacharya-lead-cdc-temporarily-rcna259596\" target=\"_blank\">in February<\/a>, who has since been overseeing the agency in an unusual dual role. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cc8f66\" class=\"body-graf\">Schwartz <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.butterflynetwork.com\/governance\/board-of-directors\/person-details\/default.aspx?ItemId=146c3f46-58f6-4eb8-8862-3f7916be903d\" target=\"_blank\">spent more than 20 years in uniform<\/a> across the U.S. Navy, Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. She left as deputy surgeon general in 2021.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2ad2fa\" class=\"body-graf\">Schwartz, a physician, earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in biomedical engineering and a medical degree from Brown University. She also holds a master\u2019s degree in public health from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and a law degree from the University of Maryland.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d418df\" class=\"body-graf\">If selected, Schwartz would step into the role as the agency grapples with controversial policy changes under Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2a574b\" class=\"body-graf\">Last month, a Massachusetts federal judge, in a lawsuit brought by the American Academy of Pediatrics and several other medical organizations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/federal-judge-blocks-rfk-jr-cdc-childhood-vaccine-schedule-rcna263697\" target=\"_blank\">halted many of the vaccine policy changes<\/a> made under Kennedy\u2019s handpicked CDC vaccine advisory panel, also known as the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP. That ruling also blocked the overhaul of the vaccination schedule.
